We liked the place enough to come back for breakfast the next morning after missing breakfast at our hotel. The day before, we’d had the fish and chips meal deal and saved quite a bit. The fish was a lovely flaky white piece, the batter wasn’t greasy, and everything came out quickly and piping hot. It’s an easy ten-minute walk from Holiday Inn Haydock, along the same road past Haydock Races.

Room 22 was lovely, modern and very clean, and remarkably quiet. We’d stayed over to see Tom Jones at haydock race course. The staff made the visit, especially the man who checked us in. He was welcoming and polite, and worked tirelessly to make sure we had a good stay. Breakfast filled us up, and lunch and dinner both had lots of tasty choices. Nothing seemed too much trouble. We’ll definitely return. 10/10.

The noise was a real issue. Contractors staying in the rooms behind the pub were loud and obnoxious, and if you want a peaceful meal, forget it. The pub may not be able to control that, but it seems like it could be a regular thing. The food was average pub grub, with small portions that left us hungry an hour later. We had to ask for the bread and butter ordered with the scampi, then got two end crusts for £1.49. Parking was plentiful, though the spaces were tight and non-disabled people had taken all the disabled bays. The Carlsberg tasted odd, as if the lines hadn’t been flushed after cleaning, and the John Smith’s had a nice head but no taste at all. Worst pint of Smith’s I’ve had in ages. Disappointing, and we won’t be back.

The XL mixed grill and my wife’s full rack of ribs were both fine, though they could’ve used a bit more flavour. We’d still return. It’s a nice pub, the staff are lovely, and there’s lots of parking and plenty of tables, so getting a seat even when it’s busy seems easy.

Lunch was delicious, and the service was excellent when we stopped in today. I didn’t get the name of the older woman with glasses, but she was attentive and really friendly. I’d recommend the place and will definitely come back. Thank you.
