It's cheap and cheerful, and you get what you pay for, so don't expect five-star luxury. I had a stay full of laughter and drinking, and I'd come back. Nobody seems to mind how noisy you are, and you can bring people back to your room and party late into the night.

The staff were friendly, though they weren't especially attentive and didn't show much authority or professionalism. The rest of the place was a terrible experience. Rooms are faded and dated, with blankets instead of duvets, and I saw old screw holes where pictures had been and mouldy shower sealant. The decor feels gauche and out of place, from the oversized chairs to a huge vase by the entrance that you have to wrestle past. It's the hotel featured on Hotel Inspector, and it hasn't improved yet. There was no atmosphere I'd want to be part of.

The one useful thing is the hospital parking for £4.50, which beats pay and display when you don't know how long a hospital visit will take. I'd last eaten at the restaurant about fifteen years ago, but when I turned up at 9pm this time it had closed. The small bar menu is only available until 7pm. The place was empty, with just the barman playing the fruit machine beside a worn out pool table.

I've generally enjoyed this venue over the years, so I was excited about Christmas dinner at The Bellingham. The idea was great and the atmosphere started out well, but the meal was a poor delivery and ended in chaos. People were waiting an hour and a half for dessert while starters were still being served. Apparently the chef walked out during service, which would explain a lot. Maybe they need to vet staff better. At £50 per person, I was very disappointed.

The staff were very friendly, but this was a hugely disappointing stay and we won't return. We booked a place advertised as bed and breakfast with a restaurant, but the booking was taken incorrectly. Luckily I checked that morning and found one room available. It needed decorating and a serious clean, most bulbs were out, and the bed was worn and tatty, though the bedding itself was clean. Nobody told us about a Halloween party that carried on until around 4am. The restaurant had five set bar meals and no breakfast. The attached bar was shabby too, with worn, tattered carpets and nearly half the lights not working.
