Britannia Hotel Wigan

The hotel’s recent refurbishment has made it look very nice, and our room was large with a pleasant bathroom. We were there for one night on a National Holidays mystery trip weekend. Breakfast from the buffet was very good, and there was a great choice of desserts. The evening main course options, though, were very basic, perhaps reflecting the price we paid. It’s a bit out of the way, and being on a coach meant we couldn’t really explore the area.

The breakfast alone would bring me back. The chef was so well mannered, and everything was cooked perfectly. I stayed for two nights with my two cats, and the woman at reception was lovely and professional. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable, and the shower was amazing.

We had to leave with my toddler in the middle of the night and find another hotel, ending up at the Premier Inn for a little more. I didn’t feel it was safe for either of us, especially with our health conditions and weak immune systems. The sheets had fresh stains and what looked like public hairs all over them, dust covered the walls, and there were footprints on the wall beside the bed. They offered us another room, but it had the same problems, apart from the footprints above the bed. There was no soap in any room, which shocked me in 2025, after Covid. The receptionist seemed shocked when shown the photos. They convinced my autistic husband this wasn’t normal there, but I don’t believe they didn’t know.

We had plenty of room in the family room for three, and the bathroom, while a little dated, was clean. There’s no evening meal at the hotel, but Hickory's Smokehouse across the road is a nice option. The staff were friendly, helpful and polite throughout. I’d stay again.
