Nicole and Malcolm made us feel very welcome during our stay for the Wigtown Literary Festival. I had a lovely time, slept in a very comfortable room, and enjoyed a delicious breakfast. A brilliant visit.

We arrived in the rain, and Malcolm came out with a huge umbrella to greet us. The hosts took time to welcome their guests. The room was a comfortable twin, and there’s a pleasant sitting room and a little fridge with fresh milk available. Breakfast was very good, with lots to choose from. It’s a handy base for exploring locally, right at the start of the high street. There are plenty of interesting shops, including booksellers, and a lovely cafe called Readinglasses with exceptional cakes and soup on offer.

Malcolm made breakfast entertaining with plenty of stories and dad jokes, and he remembered little things guests had mentioned. Nicole welcomed us warmly and showed us to our second-floor room, which had a sea view. The house has modern decor with a rustic touch and books dotted around. We stayed two nights as a base for a nearby highland cow experience and Wigtown’s cosy bookshops. Nicole and Malcolm also suggested places to try, useful since sleepy Wigtown had limited openings on Sunday and Monday. The mattresses felt a little thin and made it harder to fall asleep, so a thicker topper might help. Check-out felt rushed and less personal. The house isn't suitable for people needing step-free access, as its layout can't accommodate a lift or stairlift. The owners have a gorgeous, friendly 16-year-old dog who usually stays in their private areas. Let them know ahead if anyone in your party has severe animal allergies. Rooms have a hairdryer, tea and coffee, smart TV, mini fridge, extra-large fluffy towels, body wash, shampoo and conditioner, plus small extras like a shower cap and makeup-removal flannel. WiFi is included and worked well for planning outings. Breakfast needs to be ordered by 7pm for the next morning, along with your preferred time, so Nicole can stock the food and cook it fresh. The first two bookshops, a village store and a Co-Op are a 2-3 minute walk away. You can bring alcohol to drink at the guesthouse, though they don't sell it. We bought a bottle at Co-Op and had a nightcap in the lounge while reading. If you prefer not to socialise or like lots of privacy, a small guesthouse might not suit you, as Malcolm makes a real effort to get to know guests and make them feel welcome.

The cooked breakfasts were wonderful, especially the divine porridge, and Nicole handled our dietary requirements without any fuss. Malcolm and Nicole also gave us great local tips that made our holiday better. We had a stunning three-night stay at Craigmount while exploring this beautiful part of Scotland. The accommodation was fab, very comfortable, with every amenity we could need. It made a perfect base for seeing the local sights. Thanks for the thoughtful hospitality, we hope to come back.

You can tell Nicole and Malcolm put a lot into their business. They’re lovely hosts, the rooms are very comfortable and the thoughtful extras were appreciated. Breakfast was excellent, with lots of options. If I’m ever back in the area, I wouldn’t look anywhere else.
