It’s a small restaurant, so a few of the tables felt a bit too close together for me. Still, we had a lovely Sunday lunch, and the staff were lovely too. The starter buffet was a treat, especially for seafood fans, though there was plenty to choose from if seafood isn’t your thing. There’s parking on site, and the dining feels fairly formal, a nice change from a pub. It’s right in the heart of Winchester, so you can pair lunch with a walk by the river or to the cathedral, or do some shopping.

We went as a couple for the Prix Fixe lunch on Monday. The bistro had a cosy feel and wasn’t busy. The food and service were both very good, and we thought the meal was good value. The house white wasn’t quite for me, but that’s a minor gripe.

We came for the restaurant, not a hotel stay. Right from the entrance, reception and the rest of the staff were welcoming. Our waiter was particularly attentive and gave us suggestions for wine and accompaniments. The menu was on the small side, which I actually prefer. We both chose fish, and it was cooked perfectly. Mine was the fish of the day, a whole Dorade with lemon, olives and fennel, delicate in flavour but still a satisfyingly meaty fish. My partner’s huge cod loin came with pomegranate seeds and curried cauliflower purée, and was delicious too. The dining room had a lovely feel, with just the right atmosphere. We booked using The Fork 50% voucher, but would happily pay full price. They also offer a six-course Taste du vin menu with wine pairing for £69. If it’s at the same standard as our meal, that’s a bargain. We’re planning to return and try it. Sorry, no photos, we were too keen to tuck in.

The room was tidy and clean, and the bed was especially comfy. We only tried breakfast, but really enjoyed it. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. We’d definitely stay again.

The Taste du Vin dinner was a highlight, with great service, wine pairings and explanations, and an amazing menu. We stayed in the garden suite, which was clean and had a comfortable bed, a fridge, and air conditioning and heating that we could control. It was a surprise birthday weekend, and the staff kept it under wraps.
