The friendly service really stood out. The two staff members on shift were welcoming and chatty with customers, and one tall young man especially helped make the pub feel like an open, inclusive meeting place. He even gave treats to customers’ dogs. The food was proper pub food, with generous portions and a good menu. I love fish and chips, and that was the best piece of fish I’ve ever had. I passed my compliments to the chef. There was a roaring fire on a winter evening and plenty on tap, including ciders, lagers, and IPA. I only visited the pub and bar, not the hotel. It was my first visit and a very good experience. I live in the south, and they do it better up north 😒

It’s a little out of the way, but that adds to the charm and the hike is worth it if you’re nearby. The beer garden has lovely views, with even more fantastic scenery around it. Food and drink were great, and there was a good bar selection. The staff went above and beyond to make us comfortable, which was the highlight of our lovely visit.

We had a fab afternoon after our hike at this cosy pub. The staff were incredibly friendly and sociable, and it’s very dog friendly: they brought our dog treats and a bowl of water. There was a roaring fire and a great beer selection. I had a Hawkstone stout. What a gem, we’ll be back!

Our room was spacious and pristine, and the bed was the most comfortable one we had all holiday. The rural isolation made our Lake District break for us. Callum was a friendly, welcoming host and gave us all the information we needed. We chose the continental breakfast, since I’m not a cooked breakfast person, and he warned us there’d be more than we could finish. He was right: there was a huge range of cereals, fruit, pastries, toast, crumpets, and bottomless tea and coffee. What a treat. There were towel swans too.

Our dog got a little welcome bag with treats and a ball, and the staff made a real fuss of him. They were friendly and chatty, and all those nice interactions made the stay. The hotel is incredibly dog friendly, just as promised. Our room was spacious, comfortable, clean, and well prepared, with tea and coffee, fresh towels, soap, and a muddy board for boots. We felt at home as soon as we arrived. We had a wonderful stay at the Mortal Man and would absolutely come back to the Lakes.
