The meal was the highlight. The kitchen turned out food that was beautifully cooked and full of flavour, and I can see why it costs more than nearby places. The chef and kitchen team deserve credit. The young man who brought the food was especially good, attentive and efficient, while the waitress who took our order was friendly and polite. There were problems elsewhere. It was uncomfortable in the restaurant, swinging between too hot and too cold, and drafts came in when the rear doors opened. It was worse when the place was busy. I’d avoid the uncomfortable table opposite the kitchen too. At the front, the barman was very hard to understand. The older woman and man hosting us seemed irritable and unhelpful, with little basic customer service. It didn’t feel like they were just having an off day, and some retraining would help. The service from a couple of the younger staff lifted an otherwise average visit, but the temperature and front of house service brought it down. This place used to be the Cottage Inn many years ago.

I booked a room at the last minute when bad weather left me stuck in the area, and was surprised by how reasonable the price was for such a high standard. The staff were welcoming, and the pub is lovely, out in the countryside just beyond Windsor. My room was tucked away out back, quiet and separate from the main pub. It was beautifully decorated, with a very comfortable bed, lovely shower and a treat of underfloor heating. I also loved the complimentary homemade shortbread. In the morning I found I had my own little garden, where I had a cup of tea and listened to the birds. Easily five stars.

Flight delays led us to The Winning Post, and we were so glad we found it. The rooms and the place itself were superb, and the friendly staff went above and beyond. We’ll be back, and definitely recommend it.

We had a brilliant overnight stay at the Winning Post last August, with dinner and breakfast, so we went back for lunch while in Windsor today. What a letdown. We tried to order two wines from the menu and neither was available. My steak sliders were just OK. My husband’s small plate of fish and chips with salad came more than ten minutes after I’d finished mine, and was missing the chips, lemon and tartare sauce you’d expect. The peas were cold, the salad was bland, and we had to ask for dressing. We had two half lagers, a pint and a half of Guinness, and a bill of £45 for a snack that wasn’t very good. The service was terrible. We won’t return. Such a shame what a difference a year makes.

The pork and beef roasts went down well with all eight of us, and the potatoes were particularly good. We had Sunday lunch here. Service could be faster, as staff didn’t tend to come over and we had to ask for things, but otherwise I was really impressed.
