Higher Primrose Cottage, Winkleigh

I spent several weeks at Primrose Cottage and found it a real home from home. There’s plenty of space, and the newly fitted bathroom was excellent. Winkleigh is a surprisingly busy little village, but a wonderful one all the same, with a small shop that’s well stocked and reasonably priced. I couldn’t try the local pubs during lockdown, though they seemed very popular once restrictions lifted. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Higher Primrose Cottage for a holiday break.

Nicole was brilliant to deal with, answering our questions both before and during the stay. The cottage is a quaint little place right in the heart of the village, and its location worked well for day trips to the North Devon coast and Torquay, about an hour’s drive away. There are lots of country lanes to get around, but it’s worth it. We had a lovely welcome box, toiletries and loads of towels waiting for us. The kids and our dog loved the stay. It was too warm to light the log burner, but we enjoyed the cottage’s games, puzzles, books and DVDs. The kids loved the bunk beds. We found the double bed a little soft, though we still slept well. Parking took a little care, but we managed our 18 plate CMax just fine, and there’s a lovely little courtyard.

Right in the heart of Winkleigh, this dog friendly cottage has two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen dining room and plenty of lounge space. The second bedroom’s bunk beds are suitable for children, and the kitchen has a cooker, toaster, microwave, kettle, fridge, freezer and a mix of pots, pans, trays, cups and glasses. There’s a log burning fire, plus a TV with built in Freeview and a DVD player. It has a real home from home feel. There’s one parking space round the back, but the entrance is tight for a larger than average car. We managed to reverse park our Ford C-Max without major problems. One thing to know is that the master bedroom’s double bed has a soft mattress. We prefer a much firmer one, and might have reconsidered booking if that had been mentioned in earlier reviews. Even so, we highly recommend the cottage as a holiday destination.

Nicole gave us a very warm welcome and was a lovely, helpful source of information. She also left us a welcome pack of local goods. Higher Primrose Cottage was clean, well equipped and cosy, with a lovely log burning fire. The location was perfect, with everything you need close by, including the local store, a butcher’s and two pubs right on the doorstep.
