The Blue Boar

We finally tried the Sunday roast after eating here twice in recent weeks, and it was so good. The chicken was beautifully succulent, with lovely vegetables and loads of flavour. The puddings are always divine, too. The staff are chatty, lovely and happy to help. I’d especially recommend coming on a Sunday.

The restaurant looks and feels like it ought to be much better than this, which made the visit such a shame. I went to The Blue Boar with my family last week and we were really disappointed. The produce seemed poor quality: the salad tasted old, and several dishes were watery and short on flavour. We were also charged £1.50 for condiments that seemed to have been microwaved, which was very odd. The food gave the impression that the kitchen lacked care and pride, and the standard just didn’t match the setting.

We came from Australia and used The Blue Boar as a base for exploring the Cotswolds for three nights. The rooms were fantastic, clean and with comfy beds, and breakfast was included with a great menu to choose from. The coffee was excellent, and we had an amazing dinner there as well. Everyone on staff was so helpful and friendly. We’re very happy with the stay and will easily come back next time we’re in the UK. Thanks, The Blue Boar, for a great experience.

The atmosphere was pleasant and the staff were friendly and attentive, but the food left us disappointed, hungry, and wondering why we’d tried somewhere new. We waited a long time for breakfast, and what came was a shockingly careless meal. The plates looked large, but the portions were surprisingly small, and nearly everything was bland. The full English got the basics wrong. The eggs had no taste, the sausage was unpleasantly dry and seemed as if it had been cooked ages ago and reheated, and the bacon was very fatty and aggressively salty. The sourdough, if that was what it was, was hard, bland and unbuttered, with no butter on the side. I ended up dipping it in the beans. They were the biggest portion, but watery, under-seasoned and tasted like cheap catering beans. The avocado was particularly unpleasant, with an odd artificial taste and texture that made it seem more like it came from a supermarket bottle than fresh produce. I regretted ordering eggs with avocado. The pico de gallo added no freshness or brightness, just chopped onion as the only flavour I could detect. The eggs royale was just about passable, thanks to the smoked salmon, but poor execution and ingredient quality held it back. For nearly £50, this breakfast was bafflingly short on flavour and care. Good service couldn’t make up for food like this, and we won’t be back.
