Lion Hotel

The radiator was stone cold when I got to the room, and I had to shove the bed aside to reach it and switch it on. When I asked at reception how the heating worked on such a freezing day, I was just told it was “on a timer.” Explain what that means instead of brushing me off. I’d just finished a night shift at the local hospital and only wanted a warm room and some sleep. The receptionist was about as warm as an ice cube. She said I needed to pay “the balance,” even though I’d already paid for the room online and only owed a small amount for early check-in. It turned out to be a refundable security deposit after checkout. That’s fine, but call it that and explain it upfront, rather than waiting for a customer to ask. She also made me wait until the official 12 o’clock time without checking whether the room was ready sooner. You’ll be OK if you can get past reception.

The room had a lovely refurbishment, and the decor throughout was pleasant and good quality. Breakfast was good, the staff were helpful, and there was plenty of parking. Great location too.

We booked the Lion for a surprise 90th birthday treat for my mother. The family and friends all enjoyed the afternoon tea and buffet, and the service was excellent. Highly recommended.
