Heworth Guest House

The hosts were great, checking in regularly to make sure everything was all right and that we had plenty of tea bags and coffee. The room was spacious, warm, clean, and tidy, with all the amenities and an en suite. The furniture is a bit dated and the wallpaper and paint could use a refresh, but it was welcome to come in from the biting cold outside to a warm room. The only thing I’d criticise is the bathroom mirror. I’m short, fat, and hairy, and had to stand on my tiptoes to shave. There’s off-street parking behind the Inn. I didn’t sit at the bar, but it looked like a good spot to unwind, and they have bar snacks if you get peckish. It’s great value and close to the city centre, about 20 minutes on foot.

The staff are friendly and welcoming, and there’s outdoor seating as well as TVs showing sport. There aren’t any bar games. It’s a large, traditional pub with several rooms and a good selection of beer, lager, and cider, including two hand-pulled cask-conditioned real ales. The cask ales were in excellent condition when I visited, and they serve meals.

The barman was nice enough and there was a decent range of drinks, but the clientele were off their faces. I only popped in for a pint, and the place badly needs cleaning, especially the gents, which looked as if they hadn’t seen a cleaner in weeks. Disappointing, honestly.
