Green Roof Inn

We came unsure what to expect because the reviews were mixed. Green Roof Inn is an eco-friendly place, so don’t come expecting luxury. It’s a quiet, intimate waterfront property with lovely views, water access, hammocks for peaceful naps, and town is an easy 10-15 minute walk away. We stayed in a cottage; the only real drawback was that the WiFi didn’t reach it, so we had to go to the main house to get online. Carol and Leslie Anne were wonderful and gave us great recommendations. We rented scooters in town, which I’d also recommend, and could park them safely inside the property gate. We hadn’t planned to have dinner at GRI, but nowhere in town seemed open, so we went at the last minute. We felt bad for not arranging it ahead, but other guests had, and we were welcomed with plenty of food. Breakfast is simple, though the bread is fresh and the coffee is great. Golden apple juice with lemon is our new favorite. It was a peaceful escape without frills, and we loved the beautiful grounds and views.

It’s a cute, quiet, quaint eco-friendly place, and the service was great. Thanks, Carol. The continental breakfast is modest: eggs, rolls, jam, cereal, juice, coffee, and tea. You can get a water taxi from the dock. There’s a rocky little beach out back, nice for stargazing but not swimming. Hillsborough is about a 15 minute walk.

I had a good time here, and the restaurant on site is lovely. The seafood is exceptionally fresh. If you want the experience of sleeping under a mosquito net, this is the place.

The courtyard was a lovely, relaxing place to sit, and the site itself is charming. Rooms are very basic, but the location is just the right distance from town. Breakfast was good for a continental. Dinner, though, was underwhelming, perhaps microwaved. With better dinner and AC in the room, I’d give it another star.
