Apollon Hotel

The restaurant served varied, high-quality food, including fresh fish each day, and the bar had plenty of drinks to choose from. Rooms were cleaned daily, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. A special mention to the energetic, professional manager, Mr. Giorgos. I stayed at the Apollon Hotel from September 5th to 19th. It's well placed near both the beach and city center, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for good quality at a reasonable price.

The staff were lovely and helpful, and we enjoyed sitting outside at the front in the evenings. The bar closes at 11pm. The location is great for the beach and marina just around the corner, and Lake Voulismeni is a few minutes' walk uphill. We visited Spinalonga on a very interesting day trip, €26 or €28 with a meal, I think. On our last day reception arranged a taxi to Elounda, a seaside town well worth visiting. We asked the driver to collect us too, and it was €17 going and €18 coming back. We stayed B&B for one week, in room 619 next to the maids' cupboard, so mornings could be noisy. I gave four stars based on the room, bathroom, and downstairs toilet. The small double had a great, comfortable mattress, though space at the foot of the bed was tight to squeeze through. The listing says every room has a coffee machine, but ours didn't. We asked reception in the morning and got a kettle. Remember to rinse it daily because of the limescale. There isn't much room in the bathroom, and it could be better organised. Moving the hand towel hook on the left might make room for corner shelves for toiletries. The shower is very small and splashes water onto the floor when turned up high. Our drains smelled, there was no extractor fan, and the drain cover wasn't fixed down. The toilet by the bar downstairs also needs attention. The wooden bottom step is broken and covered with a mat, which seems like an accident waiting to happen. There were small puddles on the floor leading to it, so watch your step. We only had breakfast, with plenty of choice: boiled, scrambled, and fried eggs, bacon, cheese, ham, tomatoes, beans, toast, cereal, yoghurt, and more. You won't leave hungry.

We had to find a room for one night and two days after trouble at our other accommodation. This turned out to be a good experience for a three-star hotel in the area. It's clean, there's free Wi-Fi, and the staff are really friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included, with lots of food options, coffee, and sweets. It's not luxury, but could be a good place to stay for a few days. You can see the room before paying, so you can decide first.

The location is excellent, about a 10 to 15 minute stroll down to the harbour and busy area, though the first stretch is up a gentle hill. There was plenty of traffic, but drivers seemed to give way to pedestrians. The local beach is lovely. There are lots of restaurants, though we only found around ten bars nearby. I'd recommend the Karaoke at the Irish bar. The dining room is self-service, with hot dishes in heated trays and chilled food in large fridges. It's not restaurant à la carte quality, but I had tasty, satisfying meals each day, whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There were hot and continental breakfast choices, hot and cold options for lunch and dinner, Greek salads, and good desserts. The hotel seemed to have been repainted recently, and the public areas were clean, tidy, and free of chips, marks, or scars. Our room was great, cleaned daily, and the towels were changed each day. It had a small balcony with a clothes rack. The bathroom was on the small side but perfectly usable. One downside is the number of stairs, so it won't suit anyone who has difficulty with them. Wi-Fi was great in the lobby, bar, and dining room, but a bit weak in parts of our room. My wife and I had a fabulous time at the Apollon Hotel at the end of August. I'd give it five stars for the room, service, location, and food. I can't recommend it enough as a higher-end three-star hotel, more like four.
