Carlos Pension

In quiet Akrotiri, the ruins are an easy walk away and the bus stop for Thira is right beside the pension. It’s a simple, no-frills place with a lovely, friendly owner. Breakfast was good value, and the prices were very reasonable. A nice spot for a couple of nights.

The exposed live wires in our room nearly electrocuted our children. This is a dangerous health hazard, and the authorities responsible for tourism and safety should shut this place down before someone is seriously hurt or worse. Calling it negligence feels inadequate, it’s criminal. The room was filthy, looked as if it hadn’t been maintained in years, and was disgusting. The negative reviews describe what you’ll find, and in my view they’re all true. A complete scam and a total scandal. Stay away.

The room was tidy, and the cleaning was excellent. We also found the house lady so kind and warmhearted. Akrotiri is a great location, with the ancient archaeological site there to visit. I’d come back!

The host was kind and helpful, explaining what to see around the island and helping arrange a volcano tour. She got in touch before we arrived to make sure we’d have a room ready. They also lend out beach towels for free if you don’t have one. Those were the good parts. Breakfast looked mediocre, but at 5€ per person it seemed okay compared with other places nearby. We stayed four nights, and the room was never cleaned. They only left fresh towels on the bed. The room in the photos, including the ones on booking, is the only one with a renovated bathroom. The others are old and moldy. Our first room smelled musty and had black mold all over the shower and sink. When we complained, we were told the pictured room wasn’t available. We later found out it was the only renovated one. The host walked with us from room to room so we could choose another, but they all seemed similarly old, so this didn’t look like an isolated problem. Both our first and second rooms had cockroaches too, as shown in the pictures. I can see how the staff’s kindness might help explain the high rating, and I understand this is a budget hotel. Still, the bed plank collapsed the first time I sat on it. People should know what condition the hotel is really in.
