There’s enough nightlife and places to eat that you can leave the car parked for the evening, enjoy dinner and a drink, then walk safely back to a hotel nearby. It’s a great base in Mani, too, since it’s the largest and busiest of the villages around here.

Areopolis and Mani are well worth seeing if you’re heading to the southern Peloponnese. Areopolis has plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars, yet it’s kept its traditional feel, with stone houses and towers along its charming narrow lanes.

We visited in autumn, and even then a few buses brought crowds spilling into the streets. I can imagine it gets packed in summer. Still, it’s a colourful, welcoming little village with lots of good-looking cafes and restaurants.

Areopoli makes a handy base for seeing the Mani, and the main road closes to cars in the afternoon, so it feels safe to wander with kids or pets. Parking can be awkward, though. There’s municipal parking below the tachiarhes Square, or you can leave the car along the main road above the main square. There are little bars and cafes along the main road for drinks. For food, try Mavromichaleiko or alepis for traditional souvlaki, and don’t miss Milia bakery in the Tachiarches Square for traditional bread and the local delicacy travihtes. Limeni is only a 10-15 minute drive away, with lovely beaches and good places to eat. Areopoli itself is picturesque, with traditional hotels and plenty of character. A real jewel of the Peloponnese.

I was lucky to visit when there weren’t many tourists. In summer, the crowds must make it hard to enjoy the view. There are lots of tavernas to pick from, and be sure to get some sweets at Patisseria. Enjoy! 😍
