Ares Athens Hotel

There was a hole in my room floor, a smashed bug on the wall, and stains on the sheet and pillowcase, including something black on the sheet. It may be conveniently located, but the room was dirty and hazardous. Do not stay here.

The short walk to Plaka was about 10 minutes, and we didn’t feel unsafe walking there, even though the neighborhood seemed sketchy and had a lot of graffiti. The hotel is close to a Metro station and inexpensive, which is what we wanted for our two nights booked through Hotels.com. Beyond those points, the stay was horrible, and I wouldn’t stay again or recommend it. The room was noisy late at night, around 2 a.m., both from traffic and things happening inside the hotel. There was no safe. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. We slept on top of the covers in sweatpants and tops, so thankfully we didn’t get bed bugs. The bathroom floor got soaked because the shower had no proper bottom surround. The towels felt crusty, as if air-dried and washed without softener. Stains from previous guests remained on the walls and floors, and some door handles were broken. They’d added bedside lights, but the exposed screws meant an adapter couldn’t be used in the socket. There were bed bugs, blood on the sheets, and urine on the mattress. The front desk acted as if nothing could be done and barely apologized. A crazy experience.

The staff were friendly and happy to help. It was good value, with a clean room, a 10-minute walk to the main square and attractions, and just 3 minutes to the nearest metro. No complaints!
