The location was the real plus: close to the train station, and an easy walk to Monastiraki and the Acropolis. The room was tiny, and the mattress was so hard it felt like camping practice. The building had a musty, old Vegas casino kind of smell as soon as I walked in. Breakfast was a struggle. The orange juice tasted heavily watered down, the bread was stale, and boiled eggs aren't really my thing. I barely saw the staff, though the cleaning lady was lovely and the real MVP. Great location, but bring your own breakfast and a pillow.

The staff were so friendly and helpful, and the room was comfortable, spacious for the price, and had a great bed. It's a lovely old building in a very central spot. I loved seeing the old lift, one of the few still around, though I admit I was a little scared to ride it. I can't think of anything negative about the hotel.

For the price, it was pretty good, and breakfast was okay. The atmosphere was nice, and the location worked well for walking to major sights and rooftops with amazing Acropolis views. I only stayed a couple of nights.

We spent two nights at Hotel Cecil in Athens, and that was enough to get eaten alive by BED BUGS! We booked through BOOKING, but apparently that doesn't guarantee even the minimum sanitary standard you'd expect from a place rated 7.9. We only learned afterwards that this wasn't a new problem there. I hope people see our photos and this warning in time. I personally don't believe Hotel Cecil will improve. Breakfast was extremely basic. While guests were eating, the women working in the breakfast area walked around carrying a full bucket of dirty dishes and making a lot of noise, with dishes clattering into it. A wonderful place to avoid!

In my 28 years as an adult, I don't think I've slept on a less comfortable mattress. Replacing it would go a long way toward making this a very high-quality stay. Apart from that, it's a decent hotel for the price and the location is fantastic.
