The beds were comfortable and the air conditioning worked well, but I wouldn’t stay here again. The stairs are difficult if you’re older, and reaching the bathroom and toilet means going up two storeys. The shower is inadequate, and you have to climb into a high old bathtub to use it. The kitchen isn’t set up for cooking at home either: it’s missing glasses and a dish-drying cloth.

That little fridge in the room came in handy for keeping our water cool. My friend and I were there for two nights, and we really enjoyed the homemade food, the rooftop terrace, and how warmly we were welcomed. Friendly atmosphere and great service.

I’m from Crete, and I’m ashamed of how this person treated us. We booked this apartment for nine days on the day we were due to stay, after Booking.com suggested it when our previous booking fell through at the last minute. Within at most two hours, we asked to cancel because one of our group had leg problems and couldn’t manage the stairs. Booking.com accepted the cancellation request without fees, and the owner told us by phone he’d agree as long as Booking.com didn’t charge him. Then, a few hours later, we got a cancellation request with a charge for two nights. This was for a cancellation made within about two hours and for a medical reason. He kept saying the usual rule was no cancellations within 15 days, as if accepting ours was a favor. I have no words. He only cares about money.

The room and bathroom were okay, and we’d still recommend the place. The owners of chania rooms are really kind, and the central location makes the price very good. There’s a nice rooftop terrace, with restaurants and the port nearby.
