We had an amazing holiday here with our children. The hosts were so nice and friendly, and surprised us each day with gifts from their local garden. The only sound around the house was the bells from ships. And that view from the terrace, we’ll never forget it. A fantastic place to stay.

We were two couples staying at Auria House in Lolos for three nights, and none of us wanted to leave. The house sits among mountains and hills in the mountainous south of Chania prefecture, on the edge of the White Mountains, which you can see from the garden terrace. It feels cozy and tidy, exceptionally clean, and like home from the moment you arrive. The quiet is breathtaking, the air is lovely, and the sunrises and sunsets are stunning. The kitchen was the best equipped we’ve ever seen: cooking tools and dinnerware, sandwich bags, two kinds of coffee machine, oven, toaster, microwave, olive oil, spices, and more. There’s private parking at the house. Getting in takes some skill and outside guidance, as you’d expect in a mountain village, but we had no trouble with our Peugeot 3008. Liza and George are the sweetest hosts. We connected right away, and they helped us in an extraordinary way from beginning to end. They’re welcoming, kind-hearted, and incredibly kind, and made the stay even more pleasant. The location is great for trips to nearby villages, reached by a relatively well-kept paved road with amazing views. Hiking and walking trails are close too, including Sarakina Canyon, Samaria Canyon, Thrisso Canyon, and others. Being so close to the White Mountains is a real bonus, and Chania is only half an hour away. We really enjoyed ourselves. If we return to Crete, we’ll stay with Liza and George again in their stunning house in Lolos.

June 2019 was hot along the coast, sometimes well over 40°C, but the house stayed pleasantly cool thanks to its mountain setting. We never even needed the bedroom air conditioning. The village is about 20 minutes from Chania and makes a great base for exploring western Crete. The house itself is spacious, very clean, and has plenty of amenities plus a lovely terrace. The owners were incredibly friendly. We really enjoyed staying here and would love to come back.
