Royal Sun Hotel

We had a positive stay and would recommend the hotel to people visiting Chania. It’s a little way from the old town, but there’s a complimentary minibus for guests every half hour, with pick-up and drop-off. The hotel is peaceful and has a great view. Breakfast had plenty of variety, and dinner was very good. The beef ragu was delicious, though the portion was a bit small. The restaurant was clean and well organized. Staff were helpful and friendly, especially Nikolas, who we dealt with most often. Some of the decor looked worn, with peeling wallpaper and plaster in different parts of the hotel. In our room, 319, the bathroom socket had come loose from the wall. In a public bathroom, the hand dryer had been removed and electrical wires were visible, as shown in the picture. The room walls were thin, so we could hear people getting ready, playing music, and a child crying.

We were greeted with a non-alcoholic drink on arrival, and the free shuttle was handy once we arranged a time with the host. The hotel is modern, with clean rooms and well-kept bathrooms. Breakfast was excellent, with wide views of Chania from the dining room. There’s also an outdoor pool and a self-service laundry, which is free apart from the detergent capsules.

The restaurant serves great food, and its view of the sunset over Chania is one of the best. Book a front-row seat ahead of time. The room price also includes access to a large pool and gym. Since the hotel is a bit hard to reach by public transport, they run a shuttle into the city center and back. It’s not especially close to the city center, but the view over the city makes up for that. Our room was clean and a little larger than rooms at other hotels we stayed at in Crete. The service stood out most: we had to leave early, and they prepared a breakfast box for us to take along.

We stayed at the Royal Sun from Aug 21- Aug 28 and loved both the hotel and Chania. The view over the city is wonderful, and it’s close to the airport. There’s a large, clean pool with plenty of loungers, a generous buffet breakfast, laundry facilities, and a shuttle into town. The people really made the stay. Thanks to Maria, Nikolas, Emma, and Vaia at the front desk for helping with restaurant ideas, places to visit, and car rental. We also appreciated the shuttle drivers and Michalis. Thank you all!
