Xerolithia Guesthouse

The owners were so helpful and lovely, and we had a fantastic four-night stop on our island-hopping trip. Getting there with heavy luggage could be awkward for some, since the route goes through winding cobbled alleys and over a sandy track, though it’s close to the beach and not far from the ferry port. Our renovated room was comfortable and tastefully done, with a standout original bread oven still inside. The bed, air conditioning and flat-screen TV were all good, and so was the bathroom. There was a lovely outdoor seating spot facing a well-kept garden. My one gripe was having nowhere to put clothes, so we kept going back to our suitcases.

Staying at Xerolithia put me right in the heart of Donousa’s village, with family-run restaurants and bars nearby and a mini market just a few minutes away for the essentials. The main island beach, Stavros, is an easy stroll. Its clear water and little fish around your feet made it lovely to swim or spend a lazy day with a book. The apartment had a fully equipped kitchen, a huge bed with a really comfortable mattress and pillows, and a rainfall shower with great pressure. I also loved opening the shutters in the morning onto the small back garden, sometimes to find one of Donousa’s cats visiting. Sofia was wonderful during booking and throughout my stay. I’d love to come back.
