Palazzo Santa Maria - Historic Hotels of Europe

Palazzo Santa Maria made a strong impression throughout our stay. The owner and his son shared the story of this 150 year old home of a prominent citizen in Ermoupolis, Syros, and the restoration. It felt like stepping back in time when we entered. The Neoclassical building's frescoes and paintings were recovered, and the built in furniture and doors were refurbished. Nicolas was a wonderful source of information and available whenever we needed help. The surroundings, amenities, service, and cleanliness were all top notch. Our quiet room had a fantastic mattress, and we slept soundly. We look forward to returning to Palazzo Santa Maria on our next trip to Syros.

At Palazzo Santa Maria, the owner, Mr. Nikolas Roussos, personally welcomed us at the port of Syros and guided us to the hotel. His knowledge of tourism and thoughtful guidance gave us everything we needed for a memorable stay, and he was unfailingly courteous. We'll definitely return to this true temple of hospitality. We visited in October 2025, after the hotel received the Historic Hotels of Europe 2025 Gold Medal. It's set in a fully restored historic building, elegant outside and striking inside, where preserved architectural features blend into the renovation. Tall wooden doors lead to individually named rooms, and the painted walls cleverly imitate marble. Our spacious 32 m² Junior Luxury Suite had historic frescoes and a high quality chair sourced from the renowned Hilton Athens Hotel, the iconic ‘Marlon Brando’ chair. The Simmons mattress and large luxurious pillows made for outstanding comfort. We also appreciated the white marble bathroom, porcelain sanitary ware, and welcome treats of loukoumi, small fluffy halva pies, and Mastiha drink.

The owner clearly put years of hospitality experience and real love into the care and detail of this renovation. Palazzo Santa Maria is a jewel for his homeland, and I feel lucky to have spent a few days in this listed historic Monument building. The restoration work is excellent and fully worthy of its history. Ermoupolis also has a rich cultural scene, with events and places to visit. Five stars for Palazzo Santa Maria! We spent four nights at Plazza Santa Maria and loved the quiet setting, which made it easy to relax. The place is cozy and beautiful, with tasteful decor and thoughtful details throughout. Mr. Nicholas was incredibly hospitable and made us feel at home. He even arranged a lovely birthday surprise for my husband, which made the stay unforgettable. We highly recommend this hotel.
