We stayed for a week and had a very bad experience. The floors were dirty, and there were ants all over the room, plus bed bugs and cockroaches. The shower was poor, the water didn’t come out properly, and there was no warm water. The toilet door wouldn’t close properly, and the lock was no better. We only learned at the hotel that air conditioning cost an extra €10 a day. We paid for it, but it didn’t work, and there was a wasp nest in and around the unit. When we asked the owner to check it, he said it was working because the remote showed 16 degrees. I don’t know if he really thought the remote reading was the room temperature or was trying to avoid responsibility. We weren’t allowed to change rooms. He just took the remote and left, leaving us without air conditioning for the whole week in a hellishly hot room. The elderly couple who own the place barely speak English. Their treatment was rude and angry, with disrespectful, squeezing use of language, especially toward women.

The neighbourhood was quiet, even though it’s a bit away from busy tourist spots like Agia Marina. The pool was nice, and the studio kitchen had decent equipment. The bed wasn’t very comfortable, and unfortunately lots of insects got into the room. It was about what I expected from a two-star hotel, so all in all a fine budget stay. The bus to the tourist area and Chania wasn’t too expensive.

Olga Suites is in a peaceful area, just 300 metres from the beach, and offers great value. The elderly couple who run it are so kind and friendly that it feels almost like home. Nice and clean.

The place was old and smelled really bad, the bed was very uncomfortable, and the location felt scary. The worst part was that the whole staff was just two very elderly people who didn’t know a word of English, so there was no way to communicate. When we arrived exhausted and asked the wife for a blanket, she brought a pillow instead. We tried to explain that it wasn’t what we needed, and she got angry and started shouting. We showed her a picture of a blanket, but she said the word in Greek and taught it to us, expecting us to ask for things in her language after that. We often couldn’t tell them what we needed. They spoiled our vacation. Run!

They seemed hungry for money, with no customer service. It’s far from the centre, so they should make up for that with outstanding service and generous little touches. These days Crete feels like it just wants to milk tourists. So, no, Crete won’t be my next destination.
