4 Epoches hotel

The free transport to Chrisi Milia, Agios Dimitrios and Patitiri was a real bonus. Victor drove safely and was friendly, with useful information along the way. Alonissos is lovely for swimming, walking and taking it easy, though it isn't a party island. Steni Vala itself is a peaceful little settlement with three beaches, a busy harbour where yachts stay overnight, several good tavernas, a small supermarket, gift shop and bakery. We especially liked Tassias cooking, a family place using vegetables from their garden. Chora is also worth seeing for its history, views, cafes and shops. The old donkey trail down to Patitiri is a nice walk if you're steady on your feet. The bus to Patitiri and Chora was out of service during our stay, with no repair date given, and the island's four taxis charge 25 euros each way to Patitiri. As for the hotel, it's only about a 20-minute transfer from Patitiri and a short walk from the harbour. We've stayed in plenty of three-star places around Greece, and this was the best. It's very well run and spotless. Our room was a decent size and had air conditioning, a safe, satellite TV, hair dryer, toiletries, fridge and Wi-Fi, all included. It was cleaned daily, with towels and bedding changed regularly. The sunny pool was well cared for, and the loungers were cleaned every day too. Breakfast was generous, nicely presented and had plenty of choice. We can't understand the complaints about the selection, there was nothing we wanted that wasn't there. The team were fantastic and always greeted us with a smile. The duty managers were ready to help with anything. There's also a bar and rooftop terrace, though both seemed underused, and perhaps more promotion with Greek evenings or happy hour would help. We recommend Steni Vala for its quiet, scenery, food and warm service, and 4 Epoches in particular.
