Theros Hotel

We liked it so much that we came back for another stay. The hotel is only a short walk from the sea, and with a car it makes a relaxing base for exploring the island. Breakfast was generous and fantastic, and the owner was quick to help with requests. Our room looked out over both the sea and pool, and I loved soaking up the sun and that view each morning. The pool is a treat, with flowers, honeysuckle I think, scented around the pergola above the bar. The setting is wonderfully peaceful and the views are gorgeous. The staff have that generous Cretan hospitality from the old myths, real Xenia. I can’t wait to return.

The bathroom was really cramped, and our ground-floor room had no sea view despite the listing. The pool could use renovation too. Otherwise, it’s a nice clean hotel with good service and a handy base for getting around. Breakfast was okay, though nothing special.

Tina and the rest of the staff were lovely, and you can ask them if you need anything. Tina even invited us to a great celebration in Rodopos and to eat at Menies Café. Her family made us feel very welcome. This is a very rural, quiet spot, well away from the bustle of Platanias and far enough from Tavronitis to feel almost in the middle of nowhere. We could see the sea and mountains, and were lucky enough to catch both sunrise and sunset from the apartment. With a cockerel crowing early in the morning, it really felt like the countryside. The pool moves in and out of the sun during the day, with late afternoon the best time. It’s quiet enough to have it to yourself, and drinks, snacks and ice cream are available. The local beach has clear, Blue Flag water, but it’s rocky and has sea urchins, so bring water shoes if you’re not used to that. The nearest sandy beach is about a 20-minute drive. Breakfast is brought to your room, and you can choose the time, which is handy for an early start. There’s a fridge, so we saved some for our travels. The location is convenient for getting out and about, with free parking and a bus stop nearby. We fit four people in a room and managed with the bathroom. Shower gel and hand soap are provided. Towels and sheets are changed every three days, and the room is tidied daily. If you have a late flight, you can leave your luggage and still use the pool.

The room’s view was a letdown. The advert suggested sea views, but ours looked onto bushes and faced the bar and stairs. Breakfast was good, though there wasn’t much variety, and the Wi-Fi signal was weak. The hotel itself is comfortable, modern and quiet, and rooms are cleaned every day.
