New Haroula looks like a cute little hotel in central Fira, with everything within walking distance. The room was small but initially seemed lovely. Once we looked closer, though, the toilet seat had yellow and brown marks underneath, as if it hadn't been cleaned in a long time. The shower curtain just made a mess, and we later noticed insects throughout the room, from ants to larvae. Breakfast was poor: a couple of kinds of stale toast, some fruit, a chocolate spread that wasn't quite chocolate spread, and water. Staff hovered over us and acted as though we couldn't use the coffee machine. We'd just got off a boat and wanted to go to our room. The receptionist knew we were tired, but after greeting us in an offended tone while we waited our turn, she spent about 15 minutes listing tours and car rentals we could buy through the hotel. She was talking to another guest when we arrived, and we were finally shown to our room only after the sales pitch. The lobby staff were overbearing, just as another reviewer had mentioned. On our last day, while heading to Athens, we got a call at 11:30 telling us to leave by noon. We hadn't been told the checkout time before that, even though our pickup was planned for three hours later.

There is a pool that all guests can use for free, and that's the only thing I liked about this hotel. It's near Fira center, but several kilometers from the nearest beach. Staff and service were generally poor. They tried to sell us every excursion they could, and when we weren't interested, they scoffed at our questions or rolled their eyes. Breakfast had few choices, and the fruit, vegetables, and bread were several days old. Staff micromanaged us when we tried to make toast or coffee. The room was small, with a terrace lit by a bright white light all night that couldn't be switched off, so the room never got fully dark. The shower curtain didn't stop water from flooding the floor, and there was no do-not-disturb sign despite an ant problem. Housekeeping woke us around 7 a.m. Half an hour before checkout, the receptionist called rudely and told us to vacate the room ASAP. We were also charged €10 for supposedly required hotel services and weren't given a receipt.

Haroula, the owner, was very kind and helped us with everything we needed. We stayed six days, with one double room for my wife and me and another room for our four boys. Both rooms were tidy and very clean, and the staff made them spotless every day. The pool was nice, and the hotel's location was very good. It isn't cheap, but the position makes the price worthwhile. The bathroom was lovely apart from the shower curtain, which let water go everywhere after a shower. That's an issue I've found in many Greek hotels. Overall, I had a very positive experience and highly recommend it. Santorini is an amazing island.

The pool was nice, but the shower was terrible. The front desk woman had an unbelievable need to control everything, moving our personal belongings and insisting everything stay in its place. They also seemed overly concerned about saving money on coffee. I wouldn't come back.

It's a beautiful spot on the island, with a lovely pool area and really friendly staff. Shops and restaurants are about a 15-minute walk uphill.
