The views and scenery around this beautiful hotel are great, but the service let us down. Traveling with a baby meant we had questions and requests, including for hot water, and reception didn't do much to help and often couldn't be found. Nobody helped with the bags either. At dinner one night, we arrived at 8:30 and the first thing the editor said was that we had to hurry because they closed at 9. Breakfast staff were great, though a bit slow. The hotel is a 15-minute walk outside Antigua's center.

The garden and shared areas are beautiful, and I liked the old colonial look. But that style came with old colonial discomfort. Over two nights I got no sleep: road noise went on all night, the bed was too small and hard, and the sheets were too short. With cold nights, I had to choose whether to cover my legs or my upper body. Reception and restaurant staff were friendly, smiling and nice. I wish I could rate it higher, but a hotel should be about sleep and comfort.

The staff were brilliant, and breakfast came with a glorious view of Fuego. We stayed four nights. Antigua is a great town, and Villa Colonial makes a great base for visiting. A cheap Uber can take you anywhere around town.

The garden was cute, but the room was noisy, couldn't be darkened, and had old, damaged walls. There was no shampoo, something even many two- or three-star hotels provide. Way overpriced for what you get.

The restaurant has lovely volcano views in the morning and evening. Rooms are large, with two double beds, and the place has an old colonial style. Breakfast was a standard selection.
