Hostal El Portal de Champey

The Semuc day tour was one of our best experiences, and the location is great, just a couple of minutes' walk from semuc champay. The rest of our stay was poor. We booked a private room, but it was so noisy we felt like we were sharing with everyone else and could hear people snoring next door. After two nights, we were covered in bites that we now know were from fleas. Food was very overpriced for how it tasted, and staff were rude. Since it's the only food around, be prepared to eat there. It isn't really a party hostel and didn't feel very social. If you're on a budget, I'd suggest their sister hostel oasis.

Bedbug alert. This is a serious issue that needs to be taken seriously. I had to update my review because the bed I was given had bedbugs. I ended up with more than 100 bites across my legs, arms, back, and abdomen. It significantly affected how I felt physically, and the whole experience was uncomfortable and distressing. This is a serious hygiene and health concern that no guest should have to deal with. Future travelers should be cautious. Before this issue, I thought the hostel was a good value for a nature-focused, local stay. It felt connected to the village, with lots of greenery and a peaceful atmosphere. The staff were kind and helpful, and the grounds were generally well maintained. The location was a highlight, surrounded by nature and close to activities. Room comfort could be better, though. The structure felt a little unstable, and the beds weren't comfortable, which affected my sleep. It may suit travelers who put experience, nature, and budget ahead of comfort.

We really liked being near the pools and waterfall, and the garden and pool area were beautiful and constantly cleaned. Our little bungalow was comfortable and had its own bathroom. The on-site restaurant served great food at a reasonable price. You can walk to the pools, but you'll need transport to get into Lanquin, and we didn't feel the need to go. Contrary to the listing, the property has wifi during "Electricity" hours and accepts card payments. The trip from lanquin is on the back of a truck, but the road is better than described. Transport back to Lanquin was reliable for our early onward journey. We'd recommend staying here.

A basic room at a cheap price, so good value. The tropical setting beside the river is lovely, and it's close to the Semuc Champey entrance with pickup available to and from Lanquin. Music can get a bit loud in the evening. Food was okay, though there are some good, cheaper places nearby.
