Hotel y Restaurante Casa Texel

The rooftop terrace has a gorgeous view, so make time to check it out. I came with two other people and they enjoyed the hotel too. The atmosphere was fun, the location was great, and breakfast was decent. My room was noisy at night, although the others with me didn’t have that issue, so maybe it was just mine.

The light was another problem for sleeping. Double blinds didn’t block the LED shining straight at them from the stairs, so I moved a table to the window, stood on it, and hung a bed blanket over the light. There’s also a big, odd opening between the bedroom and living area, with no curtain rod to darken the sleeping space. Locking the bedroom door seems silly with such a huge opening in the wall. Noise came from every direction. Tuk-tuks, motos, and trucks going up and down the road echoed through the courtyard, roosters started at 4am, and kids were shouting in the street after 10pm. At 6:30am, furniture was being moved around above my room, with tables and chairs scraping along the floor. Even if I’d still been asleep, that would have woken me. I can’t wait to get away from this lake.

Breakfast at the hotel restaurant was tasty, and service was quick. The beds were comfortable, the staff very friendly, and the WiFi speed was good. It’s a beautiful spot near the Lake Atitlan waterfront, with shops, boats, and restaurants nearby. The shower wasn’t very hot, and we found a dead 2-inch cockroach next to the toilet. It was the only cockroach we saw during our two weeks in Guatemala.

There’s no AC, and the street is loud. At 5am, a guy woke me by dragging the dumpsters around to take out the trash. I’m sure he does it on purpose.
