After hiking outside Antigua, my friend and I spent a few days here to rest, and the place made it hard to leave. We loved the calm, beautiful grounds and ate most of our meals there. The food and drinks were fantastic, and our bill at checkout felt very affordable for the experience. I’d definitely book a spa package, too. Our upper suite had a balcony looking out over the lake, plus an actual tree inside the room. The bathroom was huge, with a gorgeous tub. Everyone on staff was kind and attentive, and we especially enjoyed fresh smoothies in the hot tub. I only wish the menu had more Guatemalan dishes, though everything we ordered was good. If you’re staying in San Marcos, it’s right by the dock for day trips to other villages.

The lake views, fresh food and drinks, and welcoming, attentive staff made our birthday visit feel special. We went with the Nourish package, and the clean spa circuit was lovely. Jessica and Isabella gave us massages that were relaxing and rejuvenating, just what we needed for the occasion. Getting it booked was incredibly easy, which made planning stress-free. We took the public boats across Lake Atitlán from Panajachel to San Marcos La Laguna, and that added to the day. A great pick for a celebration or a self-care day by the lake.
The room and restaurant views were probably the best part for us. On a clear day or night, we could even see volcanos de Fuego. We came to relax and take in the scenery, and got exactly that. The Armonia suite was lovely, the property is gorgeous, and the staff were great. We also had massages there, and they were good. San Marcos worked well as a base because it’s quieter, with walkable areas where vehicles don’t go. It’s also right by the public dock, so it’s easy to catch a morning lancha to other villages. One thing to plan for: getting a lot of luggage there can be tough, so pack light. The restaurant costs a little more than places outside the hotel, but the food was really freakin good. There’s a decent sized menu, and breakfast runs later than at most places. We’d come right back if we returned.
The Armonía Room was spacious, comfortable and spotless, with a huge balcony facing the lake. Its massive bathroom had a fun blend of modern and tropical design. The whole property was beautifully kept, and the staff were friendly and ready to help. We had a great three-night stay at Kula Maya. The food, coffee and cocktails were all delicious, and we’d happily come back. Such a good find at Lake Atitlán.
The front desk was a big help over WhatsApp, sorting out tour information and connections. They booked us a private Indian Nose sunrise hike, which suited me because I wanted to fit it into three hours instead of joining a 4-5 hour group tour. It took about 35 minutes to drive to the trailhead, 35 minutes up, around 50 minutes at sunrise with others, 25 minutes down, and another 35 minutes back. We chose a suite instead of a dome for more room and privacy, and it was beautiful. My kids loved the enormous bathroom and tub; I was happiest around the pool with those views. There are some bugs around, but it’s Guatemala. San Marcos is a relaxed, slightly hippy-ish town, with good restaurants, volcano views, and easy access to San Juan and San Pedro. Kula Maya is one of the nicer properties on Atitlan. Its fairly new restaurant serves very good food, though service could be quicker. I think the wait may be because they prepare everything fresh, which could be a good thing. I liked Casa Del Mundo when I visited in the early 2000s, but places like KM are good options now too. I recommend it.
