Hotel Imperio Bissau

The hotel feels like good value: it’s clean and tidy, with a nice bed and towels, air conditioning, a lift, and a good breakfast. The hot water was barely lukewarm, though I didn’t report it, so it might have been an easy fix. I also saw tiny cockroaches. It’s very clean otherwise, but if you’re not used to tropical places, you might find that sight alarming. The location is right by the presidential palace, among the embassies, and felt as safe as anywhere could. I could walk around at any hour and see locals relaxing in the parks and square, sitting on benches or picnicking while kids played. The atmosphere felt unlike any other capital I’ve visited. People were friendly, relaxed and social, without beggars harassing you. I love this place.

We had some delicious hot pizza from next door, and the hotel itself felt like a good, safe place to stay. The rooms were fresh and clean, with clean towels and great air conditioning. Staff were professional, kind, and very patient with us.

For someone new to town, this seems like a good choice for a place to stay, especially for the central location and security. It’s in central Bissau, across from the presidential palace and the main city centre monument. Some rooms have no natural daylight because of the architecture, though.

😨 Really bad experience, especially in my first hour in Bissau City. I’d booked a single room online and arrived before night. At first, the receptionist didn’t seem to know even basic English. Then he told me, “With the price you booked online, I can’t give you a room.” I tried a translator and showed him the reservation email, but it didn’t help. I sent a report through the booking app. It felt like a scam to attract tourists. If you’re arriving late, don’t book here, because you can’t know what will happen. Greetings to the receptionist: I really recommend learning some basic English. :(
