I thought I'd finally write this Google review after retelling friends about my nightmare bed and breakfast host from hell. My earlier review was only on TripAdvisor. I travel often and have stayed in many hostels and Airbnbs. No matter what went wrong, I've always found something good to say, like a room not matching its listing but the service being great, or a mix-up with the host that got resolved. This is the first time I've had nothing good to say. If I could, I'd give it zero stars. I'd rather sleep on the beach than deal with Barbara again. There were some early warning signs that the four of us, women in our mid-20s, brushed off because the place looked beautiful and had great reviews. We were excited to stay. After we booked on Hostelworld, Barbara didn't answer our emails or tell us how to get there. Roatan has no addresses, and private roads aren't on Google Maps, so the listed location was wrong. We needed two separate taxis before finding the place in the maze behind Splash Inn. We liked the rooms once we arrived. Our first interactions with Barbara were just okay, though she was very cold to one of us who had an early dive and asked to make toast. Barbara stopped our friend from using the bread and toaster and refused. On an island where people come to scuba dive, I expected more understanding of dive schedules. Making toast would've taken no effort, but we let it go as a bad day. Then Barbara had overbooked our two rooms. Instead of admitting the mistake, she said she was upgrading us to a room for all four. We had no chance to respond because we were heading out to dive. While we were away, Barbara put all our belongings in garbage bags, moved them into the new room, turned off her phone, and went to bed at 8 PM. She left us with no key or directions to the new room. When we got back, exhausted and sunburned from diving, our rooms were locked with new guests inside. Neither of the numbers Barbara had left us answered. We searched floor by floor until we finally woke her. We tried to explain how invasive it felt to have our things moved without permission, and that we'd specifically booked two rooms. Barbara shrugged and said, "what can I do? I've never had a problem with someone not liking it." She claimed she'd left us a key, shown us the room, and asked permission. None of that had happened. We were tired and getting nowhere in the conversation, so Barbara took us to what she called the upgrade. We never would've found it ourselves. The "apartment with kitchenette" was a detached shack with one bed, one bathroom, and two floor mattresses. There was no clean drinking water there, and Barbara immediately locked us out of the main building, saying the door closed at 6 PM. After that we couldn't use the common areas, the actual kitchen, or get water. Within five minutes we saw spiders, bugs crawling out of the sheets, and, to top it off, a bloodstained towel. Instead of doing the reading for our dive courses, we spent that night searching the garbage bags for our money and passports. I would never recommend staying here.

I first stayed with Barbara in 2021 and had a great time, so I came back in mid-July for four days. She was very accommodating and informative while I booked, and arranged a taxi to meet us after the ferry. I loved the bed and breakfast's architecture and the view. The room was cleaned every day, with powerful AC and interior design I couldn't get enough of. The breakfast was simple, tasty, and nutritious. I'm going to try to recreate Barbara's cooking at home, and I can't wait to plan another stay at Roatan B&B 🥰

The accommodations are rustic and tucked away from West End's main street. That means it's quiet and has the feel of living in a tree house, with seriously great vibes. It's about a 10-minute walk to the main strip along a rough dirt road. Walking is fine, though driving it can get dicey. Barbara is an excellent host, an Italian woman who's lived on the island for decades and knows it really well. The place is better than the sum of its parts.

If you like feeling at home among nature and want a patio or rooftop for reading or journaling, this place is a lovely fit. It was about a 15-minute walk from West End nightlife, enough distance to get away from the noise. The bed and breakfast is charming and architecturally special, with a wood home and paneling that made me feel like I was in a big treehouse. The open communal living and kitchen area has amazing windows and natural light, plus a large veranda for relaxing. My room had an en-suite bathroom and was comfortable after a long day of diving and sun. The owner kindly showed me other parts of the home, and all the rooms and apartments I saw were cute. The rooftop terrace was incredible. Barbara, the owner, is a lovely and sweet person to talk with and has lived on the island a long time. I enjoyed hearing her stories about moving there, watching it evolve over the years, and seeing her vision for the house come to life.

We’ll stay here again. It’s peaceful, and the host went out of her way to welcome us and make sure we had what we needed. West End’s beach, shops, and restaurants are an easy six-minute walk away, and the place is easy to find if you have the directions.
