The host was easy to communicate with before and during our four nights. We spent one night in a room with a shared bathroom, then changed dates and had a private one for the other nights. The kitchen had everything we needed. It’s near Gruz, which is handy for boats and buses, but walking to the old town of Dubrovnik takes about 40 minutes, with ups and downs. The walk from Gruz is uphill. Leaving bags costs 2€ per bag per hour, which adds up, so we didn’t use that option. It’s a good budget stay if you’re younger or watching your spending and don’t mind the walk.

The apartment was clean, and the bedroom and bathroom were spotless. The air conditioning was a real help in the summer heat. The beds, though, were so uncomfortable that a fitness mat on the floor might have been better. Getting there is a serious climb. From Gruz Harbour there are loads of stairs, which is rough with luggage, especially in 30°C heat. That should have been mentioned in the booking directions. A taxi or bus would have saved us from getting wrecked. The Old Town is about a 30-40 minute walk, depending how you feel about hills, or you can catch the No.8 bus near the shop with 'Shell' logos, two flights of stairs down. It costs 15HRK from the driver or 12HRK at the kiosk beside the stop, and buses come every 30 minutes. Gruz Harbour is at the bottom of the stairs, along with morning markets, restaurants and supermarkets. The main bus station is about a 10 minute walk downhill. Comfort: 4/10. Cleanliness: 8/10. Local amenities: 6/10. Transport: 8/10. Price: 8/10. I’d recommend it if you’re on a budget and can put up with a bad bed. If you want to be closer to the Old Town without relying on transport or walking 40 minutes, look elsewhere.

The hosts were really kind, and the air conditioning in the rooms was great, especially in August. You’ll need a bus to get to the city centre. Driving there takes a good GPS navigator, since uphill Dubrovnik is a maze.

The room felt very small because of the sloping roof, and the bathroom setup made it hard to shower properly. Check-out is at 9:00 in the morning, which feels very reasonable for a holiday.
