Hostel Free Bird

The view of Dubrovnik from the room was lovely, and the hostel is near a bus stop for trips to the Old Town. There’s also a good, reasonably priced food place right across the street, handy when you’ve just arrived hungry. The rooms were spacious, with very large lockers that fit a traveller’s backpack and two full shopping bags. Staff were helpful and answered questions, and let me leave my bags behind the counter while I waited to check in. Bathrooms and showers were roomy and quite nice, but there was no working air extraction, and mold had formed on the shower ceilings. There was also a bedbug case during my stay on 7-8 Sept 25. It’s a steep climb with lots of stairs from the ferry or bus stop. Overall, I had a good stay, but they need to deal with the mold and bedbugs.

We stayed here as a couple and found it peaceful. The port is very close, and the location sits about halfway between the bus station and the Old Town. The best part was the homemade food at the restaurant across the street, where locals eat. We ended up eating there most of the time because it was good value. Other parts of the city cost three times as much without better food.

I slept well here for four nights, and the bed was clean and comfortable. There’s staff around all the time, plus every bed has its own outlet and light. My Dorm 6 ensuite bathroom, shower, and sink had a serious black mold problem, though. It needs better ventilation and a chance to dry out. The bathrooms don’t lock from the outside, which I found odd, especially since the assigned storage cabinet does lock and comes with a key. There’s a transit stop next door, Studenac convenience store and a place to eat or drink across the road. It’s a short walk down the stairs to the bus by the port, 15-20 minutes on foot to the bus station, and 50 minutes walking to Old Town Dubrovnik. There’s a fridge, kettle, and microwave, but no way to cook beyond those. They also have women-only dorms. Good value for a stay.

The hostel is a long way from the center, about 2km, and eating out in town can get expensive. A proper stove for cooking would help. Still, I stayed longer than most solo travellers and had a lovely time. There were lots of solo travellers and other guests chatting and socializing, so the atmosphere was great. The bathrooms were separate and cleaned twice daily, which I appreciated, and the staff were lovely.
