I booked more than three months before my trip, then contacted the owner closer to the date to ask if he could meet me at the bus station and show me how to get to the property. I’d also read other travelers’ comments about all the stairs, so I asked whether he could stay with my bags and pushchair at the bottom while I carried them upstairs. He flatly refused and told me to get a taxi. A taxi can’t go up the stairs, and I would have struggled anyway. Then the owner asked me to pay 30% in advance, three days before my stay. It was disappointing that nobody had contacted me during the three months since I booked to let me know about the prepayment. I ended up cancelling because I didn’t want to stay with people who were so unhelpful. The owner wouldn’t come out to help a mother with a pushchair and would rather have guests stay elsewhere. Be aware that you have to pay in advance. That wasn’t apparent on the well-known booking website, and if you don’t prepay, the owner may cancel your reservation. Payment also has to go to a personal bank account, which complicates bank transfers and currency exchange. Never again!

The room is spacious and has a loggia, fridge, air conditioning, and very good Wi-Fi. It’s a little tricky to find because it’s in an eight-story building, and the elevator doesn’t always work. The owners are very friendly, although they don’t speak much English. The one downside is sharing a bathroom between three rooms.

It was quite hard to find. The room is in an apartment building about eight stories high, but there’s an elevator, so getting up is easy. The bus terminal is within walking distance. A kind local elderly couple run the place. They gave me some homemade brandy and, since I arrived before noon, made me pasta. They also suggested a nearby restaurant, but I thought their carbonara was even better than the restaurant’s. Some rooms have really lovely views. I’d like to stay there again if I get the chance.

The rooftop terrace is worth asking the couple who run the apartment to open. The view across Dubrovnik is breathtaking. They’re very friendly, explain what’s available around the building, and are happy to answer questions.

The room had everything I needed, including a fridge and air conditioning, and the bed was comfortable. The hospitality was superb. What more could you want?
