Backpackers Fairytale Hostel

Around 22:00-22:30 tonight, a woman was smoking marijuana in the non-smoking dorm. When I raised my concerns, the male receptionist came toward me in an intimidating way. I felt threatened and said I'd call the police if it continued. Rather than deal with it professionally, they kicked me out late at night. I felt unsafe and unsupported, and would be more comfortable staying anywhere else. Earlier, I had already found the hostel poorly managed and unprofessional. The room smelled strongly and unpleasantly, hygiene was unacceptable, and the bathrooms were dirty. I'd booked an 8-bed dorm but was put in a 10-bed room. The only receptionist was dismissive and disrespectful, and once entered the bathroom without knocking, which left me very uncomfortable. There were also instances of drug smoking on the premises, adding to the unsafe, unpleasant feeling. It's a horrible experience, and this place has a bad reputation among nearby hostels. I wouldn't recommend staying here unless major improvements are made.

I came for Christmas and ended up extending my stay because of how welcoming it felt. Vedran and his staff made sure I had what I needed and felt included with the group. I found my little tribe in Split, slept great, and it was hard to leave. Everything was clean and tidy, and the balcony had the most beautiful sunsets. It's a great budget-friendly hostel in the heart of Split. I'll definitely be back!

This was my first time staying in a hostel alone. Vedran, who works there, was thoughtful and really nice, and made me feel at home as soon as I arrived. Everything you need is there. It felt like coming back to flatmates after a day out. I recommend the experience, thank you!

We felt uncomfortable as soon as we arrived. It was smelly and cluttered, and the people and atmosphere seemed weird. The manager seemed high as a kite, and check-in dragged on as he kept asking the same questions again and again. It wasn't at all like the online pictures. Once we saw the room, we chose to leave because it felt crowded and not very safe, with other people's things all over the beds that were supposed to be ours. Gross! We had paid, and the manager wouldn't refund us, but we left anyway. This is the worst hostel experience we've had so far, even after staying at countless hostels in different countries. We couldn't leave a review on hostelworld, so I'm writing here because I don't want anyone, especially female solo travelers, to have this experience. Other people we spoke to said the hostel is known for problems with drugs and alcohol. It felt like walking into someone's gross college party apartment.
