The room was at the top of the building, with such a low ceiling that we kept hitting our heads. The shower was badly designed too, and the bathroom floor flooded almost straight away. There’s no elevator, so all the luggage has to be carried upstairs, after first hauling it for about five minutes up a dark staircase from the street. The access was terrible, especially at night. Breakfast was served at a place seven minutes away. It was overcrowded, and we left without eating because our food never came. The included breakfast didn’t look appealing anyway. This felt very inconvenient and not in keeping with a four-star hotel. We paid €451 for a Triple Room because there were three of us. Two arrived at 10 pm after a delayed flight; the third couldn’t come because their international flight from South America was canceled. We explained and asked to downgrade, but they refused, offering instead a one-hour-later checkout and free breakfast. After we posted a bad review, they called us and handled the conversation unprofessionally, even mistreating us. This isn’t a four-star hotel, and it definitely wasn’t worth the price. At best, it’s three-star. The infrastructure is old.

The staff made our stay easy from the start. We needed a ground-floor room beside the pool because someone in our party had mobility issues, and the hotel arranged that in advance. Everyone was friendly and happy to answer our questions. We spent a week at Hotel Agava in August. The location worked well for walking into Split’s Old Town, and having a pool was another reason we picked it. Our breakfast option was at the nearby Brasserie on 7. It was a new experience for us, with a good range of menu choices, tasty food, and welcoming staff. A couple of small things could be improved: the bedroom could use another lit mirror above the desk or dressing table, and our poolside room, room 8, had no private outdoor spot for drying swimsuits and towels. There wasn’t a drying rack in the bathroom either. We really enjoyed our time at Hotel Agava and would happily return or recommend it to people visiting Split.

I was surprised that, after all our correspondence, the owner never introduced herself or greeted us. Coffee in the lobby cost extra, which I refused to pay since they’d already made a nice profit from me. The location wasn’t great. Cars can’t reach the property, so we were dropped off and had to walk up a cement hill and through a dark alley. Residents live along it, with garbage outside their doors. The rooms were a good size and clean, and the pool was nice. Breakfast meant a 10-minute walk to a restaurant on Reva promenade. Last year, a death in the family forced me to cancel a five-night booking that included breakfast. We were notified five days before I was due to arrive. The owner wouldn’t refund any of the fee, including the tax and breakfast charges. I spent days going back and forth with Booking and the owner, and each told me to contact the other. Eventually, the owner gave me a voucher valid for two years. I used it this past May for a three-night stay, which was all that was available.

The rooms are a bit small, but cozy. It’s a lovely old building with a nice pool area and a great spot for exploring Split and the surrounding islands.

We could leave our bags at the hotel while waiting for the room, which was handy after arriving early. The rooms and pool area were clean and well kept, and the staff were friendly and helpful from the beginning. Hotel Agave is small and lovely, just a few minutes on foot from the harbor, old town, and Marjan Park. Breakfast isn’t served at the hotel itself; you can get it at either of two cafés along the nearby harbor promenade. We had a very pleasant stay and would book again.
