Hotel Dujam

It’s centrally located in Split, within walking distance of colleges and shops. There are basic European hostel facilities, including a shared kitchen for every four rooms, with two people per room. It’s a very good facility, though it’s no longer a hotel and is now a student hostel.

My room was okay and looked like the pictures, but that’s about the only positive. Cooking is a real problem: there are just two kitchens for the whole hostel, sometimes only one, and they aren’t well equipped. The cooker has only two burners, so you can wait more than two hours to make something. The shared areas are almost always dirty, which is disgusting. Communication is difficult, too. They ignore emails, and you can wait forever unless you call and push for an answer. I also had to beg them to return my deposit. If you don’t want a fight over your money, I’d choose somewhere else. Really don’t recommend it.

The location is around 20-30 minutes from the city center, with a couple of grocery stores along the way. Given the distance, you’ll need an Uber or taxi to get between the hotel and the bus station or port. If you’re stuck and need somewhere for one night, it’s adequate, but I wouldn’t pick it if there were closer options. The room was sparsely furnished, but the towels, linens, and bathroom were clean enough to meet my minimum standards. The TV was only about 19 inches, though I don’t watch much on vacation. The wall unit AC cooled the room well. It was a non-smoking room, but smelled strongly of cigarettes. I was tired enough to put up with it for one night. My friend in the next room had no smoke smell, so maybe I was just unlucky. The beds were only comfortable enough.

The free WiFi was fast, and the AC worked well. I was there with a group but shared a twin room with one other person. The bed wasn’t very comfortable, and the shower was fixed halfway up the wall with no way to adjust it. There was no safe. Prices seemed high compared with hotels nearer the old town. Breakfast was disappointing, just bread, cold meats, and fruit, with no hot food.
