Old Town Hostel Split

The people were nice and the staff seemed pretty relaxed, but this felt like a family apartment that had been casually turned into a hostel. I wouldn’t expect much from it, and based on what a proper hostel should have, I don’t think it’s worth more than 20 euros a night. Seriously, there aren’t separate toilets and showers.

The location couldn’t make up for what happened here. After one awful night, I left and checked into a hotel. This is a couple of years late, exactly three years, but the stay still sticks with me. I’ve traveled solo a lot as a woman, and this was the worst hostel I’d ever stayed in. I booked a mixed six-bed room and arrived around 7 or 8 pm, where I was assigned a top bunk. Water from the shower got into the bed, and the place felt like a condo converted into a hostel. It was very noisy, and the bathroom was tiny and dirty. In the middle of the night, a random man tried to grab my feet and climb into my bed. I yelled and fought him off. Nobody in the packed room said anything. Everyone seemed to pretend to be asleep and mind their own business, maybe because it was Split and people might have been drunk. When I got up, I realized the lower bed was occupied by a couple, the receptionist and her boyfriend, who was a performing artist. I later heard that street performers can make decent money in Split during the summer. I was shocked to see two people sleeping in a tiny twin bed. It was supposed to be a six-person dorm, not seven. I asked the owner to refund the second night, but she said the man who harassed me had just been drunk and nothing would happen. I was so freaked out that I couldn’t sleep, so I insisted on the refund. I was having an anxiety attack, alone in a foreign country where I didn’t know anyone, after being harassed. The owner told me, “F### You,” because I had told her staff directly that I’d write reviews to warn people if I didn’t get my money back. This place could have ruined Croatia for me if my next two stays hadn’t made up for it. Croatia is definitely worth visiting, just don’t stay at Old town hostel. Save yourself the stress. This place is truly bad.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the rooms and bathrooms were comfortable, even though they were small and nothing fancy. It’s a small hostel, but I met lots of great people there. We cooked dinner together and went out in the evenings. The kitty was cute and entertaining, too. The location is perfect for exploring old town Split, with nightlife, the bus and train station, and the harbor all nearby. I had a great stay!

I loved the snug, super-clean hostel, and the view from the windows was honestly breathtaking. The staff were exceptionally sweet, and the location was great. There’s an adorable cat wandering through the rooms that you can pet. Gibly music plays in the background all day and greets you when you walk in.
