Hotel Gallus

The bed was badly sunken in the middle and very uncomfortable, and the supposed non-smoking room smelled of cigarettes. I was also given the wrong breakfast hours: Booking.com said until 11AM, but it actually ended at 10AM, so I missed it. The corridor was covered with construction materials and plastic because rooms on the same floor were being renovated. This is poor accommodation and poor business ethics. DO NOT RECOMMEND. They said they would compensate me with a 30% refund, sauna access and lunch. Both the staff and manager agreed, and I have a record of it, but after I left they said they couldn't return the promised 30%. Booking.com has already refunded part of the amount because the hotel didn't keep its word. The lunch felt like I was being served only because it was free, and if I'd had more time I would have eaten elsewhere. The hotel insisted on Booking.com that my room was superior. It was a small single room with an old, sagging mattress, so if that was superior, I'm concerned about what a standard room is like. They also claimed it was impeccably clean, though staff acknowledged the cigarette smell, which I have on record. Either it wasn't inspected or the process is failing. Their so-called welcome treat was instant coffee and a packaged croissant, with no kettle or even a small 500ml bottle of water. The luggage help lasted less than a minute. Breakfast was late only because I was making a complaint that morning, and the listed hours on Booking.com were wrong. For a 3-star place, misrepresenting things over a small amount instead of admitting mistakes is disappointing. Zagreb has plenty of good accommodation and B&Bs for better prices, run by people with more honesty.

We found the room spacious, clean and quiet, and the woman at the desk was incredibly helpful, including with a great dinner recommendation. Breakfast was good too. With lots of free parking and such a fair price for a room of this caliber, we had a great experience.

The Wi-Fi worked well, and the food at the first dinner was excellent. The problem was how dinner was run. I was told it started at 7 pm, and when I asked when it ended, the answer was that it would be better not to arrive late. It was an all-you-can-eat meal in an almost full restaurant, but finished dishes weren't replenished. By 7:10 there was no food left, despite people having paid, and after 27 minutes we were all asked to leave while staff cleaned and, I think, set up for breakfast. The place and staff are nice, and the food is good, but you feel almost chased out at dinner. Gallus won't be my choice when I return to Zagreb.

We stopped here on our way to the coast and paid, I think, under 100€ for the two of us. For that, we got the biggest hotel room I've ever stayed in, complete with a Jakuzzi. A surprisingly good hotel, and breakfast was great too.
