Bauhaus Astoria Hostel

I paid €15 for a night, and it was by far the worst hostel I stayed at in Budapest. It felt like someone had turned a regular flat into a hostel. The only person I saw who might have been staff was a man I assumed was the owner. I’d told the property my flight was due after midnight, but they sent a long list of entry instructions. Getting to the bed meant passing through several locked doors, with codes and sensors that often didn’t work properly. It took a frustrating amount of time and effort just to get inside and sleep. For a hostel, guests should be able to check in easily at any hour if they’ve informed the property in advance. The flat wasn’t clean when I finally got in, and the bed was uncomfortable. The central location and working heating were the only positives.

The rooms smelled bad and were dirty. We spoke to the room’s owner by phone, and he said he’d give us a refund, but then rejected my cancellation request. I want my money back.

For about £45, we got a very reasonably priced twin room close to the city center. The river and national museum were both within a ten-minute walk. It felt less like a hostel and more like someone renting out a room in their apartment. Our flight was delayed, so we checked in late, but the host accommodated us at no extra cost.

I stayed one night in bauhaus and really appreciated the owner’s patience and kindness. My schedule was busy and I replied late, but he was understanding and made sure everything went smoothly. The place was cozy, clean, and had everything I needed. I hope I left it as tidy as I found it. Grateful for the hospitality, and I’d gladly come back. Thank you!
