The rooms aren't in good shape at all: they smelled strongly of mold, the mattresses were badly worn and uncomfortable, and the bathrooms, towels, and linens were filthy. A lot of things in the rooms were broken or didn't work. On arrival, they asked for cash and said their card machine was broken. That leaves you with no way to get your money back if you choose to leave early. This doesn't seem to be a hotel at all. The address given on Google for Budapest River Hotel appears to be made up, and the actual place is the old Monarchia hotel and restaurant, about 500 meters away. People from the restaurant run what they call a hotel, which is basically rooms inside that building. Looking at reviews for old Monarchia hotel and restaurant, you can read about other guests' experiences. Some reviewers said the people running it were thieves and crooks, and I agree. It seems they came up with a new hotel name to bring in more people. I hope others read this before falling into the same trap. Stay away at any cost.

The room was disgusting, and we didn't sleep there. The bathroom smelled of bleach throughout the room, and the toilet seemed to be at the wrong end of its weekly cleaning schedule. The bed was stained, maybe from earlier guests or from complementary pets. It looked more like a place for dealing than sleeping. While we were there, a baby kept crying somewhere in the building. We arrived at the address listed on booking.com, which didn't match the one shown on Google. The reception was tucked into a basement corner used as a restaurant bar. Because it was late, we let them show us the room. They took us through a door into a building that might have been nice if it had been renovated sometime last century. Its hallway seemed to serve several apartments. Inside one, there was another hall with a washing machine, a bucket of dirty water, used flip flops, and numbered doors. One was our room. Our guide unlocked it with her own key, not the one I had. This is not a hotel.

The place is old and smells like garbage. They even break in and steal your belongings. This so-called hotel is run by thieves, so be warned and never go inside.
