The rooms were okay, but the location and staff were excellent. I stayed a couple of days in 2013, and it’s still one of my best hostel experiences. After a 10 hour ride through Hungary, I arrived by bike in the middle of the night. The night staff were so friendly and helpful, and even gave me a beer. They found me a store open on a national holiday where I could buy wrapping for my bike before flying home, arranged a cab that could take the bike, and shared pro tips for Budapest nightlife. I went well away from the tourist streets, pubs and clubs. A great place to stay and meet other people.

The location is the only thing going for this place. I didn’t feel safe or secure at all. My ground-floor room smelled of human sewage, and one night it was almost unbearable. There was very little security: no lock on our room door, even though it was just me and my friends in there, and hostel guests kept leaving the locked outer doors wide open, leaving our belongings accessible to virtually anyone. There were double doors in our room that we thought were locked. One night at 2 AM, strange men we’d never seen stuck their heads in, even after we repeatedly told them to leave us alone. Seriously, don’t stay here if safety matters to you.
