The offer and marketing sounded tempting, but what we found was a cold shower in every sense. It was a huge disappointment, and I regret not checking the reviews first. We’d agreed by phone on an apartment with its own kitchen, but got a small room instead, with a very poorly equipped kitchen shared among the rooms. We still had to pay the apartment rate. The jacuzzi in the yard hummed all night, while an air freshener in the hallway whistled, so relaxing was out of the question. In December we were charged a daily fee for an air-conditioning remote we neither asked for nor used, since we needed no heating or cooling. Different kinds of arthropods kept showing up in the room. Sometimes we caught them and put them outside, but others vanished, then came out at night and crawled over us. There was hot water on only one of our four days. After that we had to use the public showers at Castle Bath. We brushed our teeth and washed dishes with cold water too. The restaurant handling breakfast was below par. For 20,000 a day, we could have booked somewhere far better. We fell for the offer. We might as well have pitched a tent on the outskirts of Gyula, for about the same standard and a much lower cost.

The place we paid for was Amfora, but the company put us in a sauna at Triangle House, surrounded by flies and mosquitoes. There were hidden costs, used bed linen, a partly torn blackout curtain, and cleaning that was hard to forget for all the wrong reasons. The shower was an extra one-handed model, the toilet seat slid around, and there was a soft drink in the fridge with no idea how long it had been there. After 4:00 PM, you could barely reach anyone by phone. Maybe a burst pipe would be enough to change their attitude. Sleeping or watching TV wasn’t much comfort either. Lots of channels were listed but couldn’t be received, and the remote only worked if you pressed it hard, all while flies and mosquitoes took turns biting us. I wonder how this company still operates in Gyula with so much competition. Never again, anywhere, with this company.

The Castle Bath is great, but we won’t return to this accommodation. The website was seriously misleading, and the place was a two-star experience at best. Cleanliness clearly wasn’t a priority. The worst part was water coming through the shower head via 2 cm of black mold. We couldn’t get the rooms dark, despite trying everything, and the free coffee machine was empty. We were charged the full amount before we’d even seen the apartment. Meals were at a restaurant a five-minute walk away, where the selection was small, portions were satisfactory, and coffee cost extra. The bath entry covered only the beach for one day and only two people, although there were four of us, including two children.

Coming here felt like a big scam, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. The apartment may have looked like its photos years ago, but now it’s run-down and dirty. The rooms were dusty, the furnishings worn, and there was broken or defective furniture. The shower tray had more mold than any camembert cheese. The accommodation’s supposedly closed parking area was basically just a retractable fence. If you arrive at 8 pm after a Friday workday and a trip across the country, it’s hard to see why they charge extra for coming late. Food was served at a nearby restaurant. Service was zero, the selection was limited to three eggs or three sausages, and since it wasn’t a buffet, you got whatever amount they decided was enough. The staff were jerks too.
