The electricity cut out three times during our week, and getting the dining room and bathroom lights to stay on took a long struggle. The supposed free entry to the Hévíz thermal bath also turned out to cost 3,000 HUF per person at checkout, despite what our landlord had promised. As for the apartment, the coffee maker failed on day one, the toaster wouldn't switch on, and the socialist-realist kitchen cupboards sometimes shut and sometimes didn't. We had trouble turning the key in the front door, and had to push the bathroom door closed with our knees. The newly installed Whirlpool air conditioner quit after two days, leaving us in an attic apartment in thirty-odd-degree heat. We were very disappointed. We expected more for what we paid.

At 10:05 on departure day, I got a phone call, then someone came upstairs and knocked on my door, saying, “That wasn't the case.”

A lovely stay in a beautiful guesthouse. It was clean and tidy, and we were glad to be there.
