Okszi Vendeghaz

A really comfortable, great place for international students, especially newcomers trying to find accommodation. The staff were cooperative, and the owner was particularly courteous and friendly, always ready to help students.

We came with the Angry Dragons Qatar dragon boat club for the IDBF's Clubs Championship, and Chris of OKSZI Vendeghaz and his mother made us feel at home. The place is a beautiful, cozy villa with several rooms. Their garden is lush and green, and at night you can see the sky clearly above it. I still remember my first call with Chris, when I only wanted the postal code so I could have something delivered. He asked about halal food and our culture, then took steps to make sure we felt welcome. I’m writing this three years later and still tell family and friends about OKSZI Vendeghaz. Chris and his mother made our trip to Szeged memorable. I’ll stop by again next time I’m passing through. Kudos to them both!

The night before my exams, I ended up out on the street. I’d booked this hostel days in advance because I had exams in Szeged, and I’d contacted them a few days before to confirm I was coming. At check-in, an older woman started asking for a negative COVID test in a mix of German and Hungarian. She wouldn’t let me use the Wi-Fi and kept repeating, “COVID TEST NEGATIV, POLICE.” I had official approval from the Hungarian police to enter without a test because I was staying only 48 hours, but that made no difference. When I found public Wi-Fi, I called the person in charge and explained what happened. He said she was the owner and there was nothing he could do if she didn’t want to let me in. I guess she thought she had more authority than the Hungarian Police, who had given me the approval. It was a very negative and inconvenient experience. They could have told me about the test requirement before I arrived, instead of leaving me without a place to stay the day before my exams.

The rooms are clean and spacious, with shops, restaurants, and the city center nearby. The owner speaks English, is polite, and is happy to answer questions. I’d definitely recommend it 👌
