The experiences here were a real highlight: a private eco farm, beach horseback riding, surfing, a beach setup just for us, and a cultural workshop with local people. The food across the three restaurants was sublime too, including a chef’s table with Michelin chefs rotating monthly. Service was incredibly attentive throughout. The property sits in a secluded part of Sumba, on an island that already feels remote. When you arrive, the beautiful buildings blend naturally into the surroundings, with beige and light tones. The interiors feel modern and airy while bringing Sumba’s culture into the design, especially in the rooms. Walking down to the private beach feels like entering a peaceful sanctuary. Every part of our stay was remarkable. I can’t recommend it enough. You have to come!

Two weeks felt like a long time on Sumba by the end, since the island’s infrastructure is still developing and there isn’t much to do outside the resort, especially in the evenings. Still, Cap Karoso made it easy to slow down and relax, and we’re so grateful for the experience. We’ll definitely be back. Our engagement during the stay was the highlight of the trip, possibly of our lives. The team helped me with every detail of the proposal and made it all feel flawless despite the weather. David, the GM, and the whole team made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. The servers, gardeners, spa staff, and guides were all genuinely welcoming. Special thanks to Tomas for the adventures. Hospitality was exceptional throughout. The food was excellent during our stay, though the menu has a slight Western touch. Thank you, Cap Karoso.

The food was exceptional, the gardens are lush and beautifully kept, and the whole place has a wonderfully relaxed feel. The beaches and water are beautiful too, and there are plenty of activities, led by people who clearly care about them. We spent five excellent days at Cap Karoso in early January 25. Sumba feels remote and largely untouched, and even the scenic drive from the airport was relaxing. Management greeted us warmly, and that same care came through in every staff interaction. Our two-bedroom villa was beautifully designed and in very good condition, though some maintenance was coming due. I personally would have liked a TV :). I gave service a 4 because many staff members are new to hospitality and still learning, but the warmth and love they bring to their work are hard to fault. Cap Karoso is a must.

The pools are gorgeous, and one is absolutely gigantic, with plenty of room to relax or swim. Handi in the spa deserves a special thank you for the wonderful massages. They were truly exceptional. Our room was spacious and beautiful, right on the beach, with a semi-open bathroom that made us feel immersed in nature. Everything was spotless, from the crisp, luxurious linen to the very comfortable duvets and pillows. The restaurant was outstanding, with delicious, beautifully presented food and a generous, varied selection. Across the resort, the ceramic cups and plates, artworks, and interior details all felt carefully chosen, authentic, and connected to Sumba. You can see how much heart, effort, and vision went into the place, including the subtle, respectful references to Sumba’s culture and soul. The whole team greeted us with warm smiles and genuine kindness. The service felt both heartfelt and professional. We’d love to come back. Warm regards, Maj & Torben Denmark

The setting, design, food, and friendly staff give Cap Karoso excellent foundations, but details around pricing and activity planning kept our stay from feeling five-star. We spent four nights there in early January, and the property is beautiful, in an unspoiled part of the island with direct access to a wide sandy beach. Our beachfront suite was spacious, elegant, and excellent, with its own beach access. The food was very good throughout. We especially enjoyed the guest-chef dinner by Clotaire Poirier, and the beach and Indonesian restaurants were consistently strong. The pools are beautifully situated, and staff were reliably friendly and amiable. The room was around USD 700 a night, but with transfers, meals, drinks, spa treatments, and activities our daily spend came close to USD 1,000. Some things felt too transactional. Round-trip airport transfers cost around USD 180, very steep by Indonesian standards, and cocktails were much more expensive than at the other luxury hotels we stayed in on the same trip. The spa treatment itself was good, but there was no blow dryer after showering and basic items like body mosquito repellent weren’t available. We were also told at checkout that we’d have to pay to take the woven jute beach bag home, though beach resorts typically give these bags as gifts and it likely costs only a couple of dollars to make. We had safety concerns during activities as well. Our snorkeling guide was there but didn’t actively lead, monitor us, or check that we were safe. Another excursion was poorly planned, taking us to beaches that were unsafe, closed, or not worth visiting, and wasting half a day. More attention to detail, pricing consistency, and excursion planning would make a big difference.
