Sanak Retreat Bali

The restaurant and bar cost more than the Bali average, probably because there isn’t much around. A few decent cafés and restaurants are 10-15 minutes away by car. Given the higher prices, I would have liked the staff to be a little more attentive and friendly. Still, the bungalows are beautiful and comfortable, right among rice fields and jungle. The pool area looks out across the mountains, and the rooms are quiet, clean, and comfy, with balconies facing the fields. There’s also a nice kids’ area above the restaurant. A good escape from Bali’s busy, noisy tourist spots.

At night you can hear nature, and there may be the occasional bug around, so this place suits people who are fine with that. I slept really well, and the spacious bungalows were very comfortable. I loved the views from both the common hall and my bungalow. I choose places partly for what they stand for, and Sanak Retreat really does live up to its focus on community empowerment and cultural preservation. Every detail felt thoughtful and full of love. They support local livelihoods and work with the surrounding community instead of simply building. I also loved the interiors and furniture, with their intricate artwork depicting Balinese culture. We felt at home from the moment we arrived. The nature, atmosphere, and people all felt so authentic. We had planned on two nights, but liked it so much that we stayed a whole week. It ended up being the highlight of our two months traveling through Bali and Lombok. A truly special place.

We had a really good week here with our three young children. If you’re very active, though, four days may be enough. Sanak sits among small rice paddies, so there could be some disturbance from burning after the harvest. It’s a charming place to stay.
