For the price, it’s not bad. The room stays at an okay temperature, though the air-conditioning doesn’t feel very cold because the bamboo walls don’t hold the cool air. The water heater takes some figuring out: set it around 5 o’clock, pull it up, then wait patiently for three minutes for warm water. Breakfast is fried rice only, and drinks cost extra.

We felt sexually harassed by Indonesians. This was a horrible experience in Karangkasem, and I won't return. We had booked through Traveloka and left our contact number, but got no message about a water problem that meant we had to change hotels. Before that, I'd called to change our booking from a double bed to twin beds for three nights, and they said yes without explaining anything. When we arrived to check in, we were suddenly sent to a travel office with the same name, Java Sunrise. We were worn out before our Bromo tour and accepted the small-house homestay, even though the room wasn't okay. There were no twin beds, just an extra bed. When we argued with the manager, Coco, he got upset while explaining and there was no chance to resolve it. We couldn't sleep at all. Our booking listed free Wi-Fi, breakfast and a hot shower, but breakfast was the only one provided, and only after we asked. The owner didn't know about the other inclusions. We needed a shower before our Ijen tour that night, but nobody had mentioned this issue. Getting to the bus for Bali wasted a lot of our time. Nobody could speak English, and although we said 10:30, the bus came at 11:10. A travel agency staff member arrived at the homestay after 10:30 and waited another 10 minutes. Our gentle house owner was upset about the delay, and the driver was upset with us, saying it wasn't a private bus. When we booked, they only said there was an air-conditioning bus to Denpasar. It was a local Damri bus with many cockroaches. They never explained the time or any other option. I told them I had to catch an international flight from Bali and didn't want to be rushed. I didn't see manager Coco after that night.

A really nice place, much better than the homestays by the station. Oddly, blankets are only provided in the rooms, not on the dorm beds.

A quiet, nice place to sleep, with convenient access to other places in banyuwangi. There are lots of food options nearby, and all the staff are kind and nice. Best homestay.

A good spot for a night. The staff were very helpful with every request.
