Zen Hostel Kualanamu

A good location for anyone catching an early flight, with a free airport shuttle. The room was spacious, furnished nicely, and had a large fridge and a working kitchen counter. The bed and pillows were comfortable, and the front office staff seemed professionally trained. The hotel is CHSE certified.

The location is convenient for the airport, with an Indomaret, a Padang restaurant, and a mosque in the complex. The shower in room 307 had weak water flow, room service missed the toothbrush and bottled water, and the Wi-Fi wasn’t very good. Restaurant food was average, though the snacks were tasty. Fairly good choice overall.

At check-in around 8 pm, the receptionist seemed rushed and wasn’t very friendly, maybe because there were a lot of guests. The breakfast area is a little far from the hotel. The toothbrush packaging wasn’t sealed, so it didn’t look very sterile, and a previous guest’s comment card had been left behind.

The room looked spacious and clean at first, but there were roaches everywhere, in the “kitchen” area, on the floor, and in the bathroom. Staff seemed to know, since they were walking around with insect spray. They shouldn’t give rooms like that to guests when they know what’s going on. The staff were okay, not especially friendly, and the man at checkout was awful. I wanted to tell him we’d barely slept because of the roaches, but before I could say anything he took the key and said, “OK bye,” like he wanted us gone as soon as possible. The airport shuttle was the one good thing, and I really appreciated it.
